MEET THE COACHES
VARSITY BLUE TEAM
Declan Costello brings high level playing, coaching, and analytical experience to the Mavericks organization. Costello played 15 seasons of competitive Hockey at the AA, high school varsity, and collegiate club levels. Aside from his time as a player, Costello spent three years working in hockey operations and video analytics for the NCAA D1 Men's Hockey program at his alma mater, Bowling Green State University, and one year as the video coach and analyst for the NCAA D3 Women's Hockey program at Chatham University. He has also made coaching stops as a coach for the USA Hockey girls development camps, Bowling Green Hockey School, and as a development coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets Hockey League. Additionally, Costello has spent three years coaching high school athletics at both the Varsity and JV levels.
Coach Costello prioritizes player growth both on and off the ice, through creating a positive environment and building a culture where players are comfortable expressing themselves and learning. Costello also places emphasis on the development of hockey IQ, fundamentals, and critical thinking skills.

Joey Recktenwald brings extensive playing and coaching experience to the Columbus Mavericks organization. With a strong foundation in competitive hockey, he is dedicated to developing skilled, disciplined players while promoting a team‑first culture.
Coach Recktenwald emphasizes fundamentals, hockey IQ, and accountability, creating a positive environment where athletes can grow both on and off the ice. His experience, leadership, and passion for the game continue to drive the Mavericks program forward.

Dan Bordner is a 5-year Alumni of the Northeast Storm, playing in 8th grade until graduation where he went on to play D2 ACHA Hockey for the University of Louisville. He's been with the Storm now, the Mavericks organization for the past 4 seasons.
Coach Dan is a Level 4 USA Hockey Coach where he has expertise in hockey IQ, in-game tactics, fundamentals and creating a fun environment for everyone on the team. His experience will benefit both the Varsity Blue and Varsity Green Mavericks.

JUNIOR VARSITY
Taylor Andersen brings over 20 years of hockey experience to the Mavericks organization, where she has coached high school athletes for the past three seasons. A Northern Virginia (DMV) native, Taylor grew up playing both high school and travel hockey and now serves as a Level 4 USA Hockey official and level 3 USA hockey coach.
Taylor also competed in NCAA Division II women’s lacrosse at Urbana University as both a goalie and an attacker. With additional experience working as an athletic trainer at the collegiate and club levels, she prioritizes player development, safety, and a positive team environment.

Joe Gray brings a high-level playing background and a detail-oriented approach to coaching and player development. A former AAA player and a record-setting scorer at St. Francis DeSales High School and Otterbein University, Gray emphasizes skill progression, Hockey IQ and compete level in every practice. With years of experience working in ice rinks and training players of all ages, he focuses on adapting to each athlete's needs while reinforcing structure, accountability, and a team first mentality. His goal is to help players not only improve their game but understand it at a deeper level.
